We are one of the originators of cast masonry lining in the United Stated; utilizing the unique Ahrens Cast Masonry lining system. (www.ahrenschimney.com) The Ahrens method of chimney relining and repair was invented in Germany in 1983 by a concrete engineer named Paul Ahrens. In the course of our training, we have traveled to Germany and have observed the European method of installation and have adapted this to the applications as needed in our own country.
The Ahrens system utilizes a slip-form method of concrete forming, similar to how concrete materials are manufactured at a factory. With the slip-form process of relining, we utilize a steel form for the flue area with the flue having a vibrating mechanism installed inside of the former. Once the steel former has been properly positioned at the base of the flue to be relined, the Ahrens mixture is then poured on top of the former. After a suitable quantity of mix has been placed on the former, it is then winched upward, vibrating as it moves. The combination of the movement of the form along with the vibration serves to compact the new flue with a 2100-PSI strength insulated refractory material, backed with a lifetime guarantee. After the flue has been completely poured, the form is removed from the chimney and is then inspected.
Once the flue has passed the rigid inspection of our installer, it is then coated with the exclusive Ahrens Second Liner mix. This second liner is applied via a spray application insuring even coverage over the entire flue area. Once this hardens, the flue is then impervious to any acids or moistures which may be produced by the appliance. Upon completion, the client has a flue system that is considered state-of-the art in the chimney relining industry.
The advantages of the Ahrens system over other cast masonry systems include:
It is the ONLY cast masonry system that is tested and listed by the Underwriter’s Laboratory to their most stringent test standard of UL 1777 at zero clearance to combustibles. It carries a lifetime warranty; the most comprehensive warranty in the industry. It is the strongest cast masonry system available with strength of 2100-PSI compared to others at only 400 – 700 PSI. The Ahrens liner can be swept with a steel chimney sweeping brush. All others allow sweeping only with a plastic brush. It has the longest track record of any cast masonry method with the number of linings installed numbering in the millions. It includes the exclusive Second Lining coating.
